Insulin is one of the most anabolic hormones available. Fortunately, as a natural athlete, you have high levels of control over insulin release. For this reason, it is crucial to prepare the body for increased insulin sensitivity on an on going basis for maximum growth. Read and follow the Underground Growth Preparation Phase in lesson 3 or my bodybuilding book Underground Mass Secrets for a complete nutritional system to increase insulin sensitivity.
Insulin sensitivity is only moderately increased from heavy resistance training protocols. (15, 16, 17)
Insulin is a storage hormone triggered by meals dense in calories and carbohydrates. Its main purpose is the regulation of blood sugars (glycogen).
When high levels of insulin are beneficial we can increase our insulin output by eating high calorie meals containing high levels of simple and complex carbohydrates. When it is beneficial to have low insulin levels high calorie meals containing simple and complex carbohydrates must be avoided.
Times to benefit from increasing insulin levels are after weight training and cardiovascular exercise and first thing in the day. When training for explosive growth spurts certain dietary eating cycles can be performed to increase the time frame one can benefit from insulin’s anabolism.
Insulin blocks the use of fat as fuel. For this reason it is important to watch the types of carbohydrates eaten (carbs trigger insulin release), the amounts eaten, and the time of day we eat carbohydrates.
